In preparation of the 2035 Plan Update, in 2009 the MPO hosted a Safety, Security and Emergency Management Workshop. Safety and security are key components of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) legislation. Hillsborough County’s Emergency Management, Public Works, Hazard Mitigation, Sunshine Line and Sheriff’s offices were joined by the Florida Department of Transportation, Port, Aviation and Expressway Authorities as well as HART and the Plant City Fire Chief to identify current and future transportation hazards as well as potential impediments to an emergency evacuation. Information gathered from these experts will be used to address safety and security measures in the 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan update.
